Rob Bishop is a professional drummer and educator with over 25 years of playing and teaching experience. Do I need a drum kit to start?
No. A practice pad and a pair of sticks is all you need, and honestly that's how I'd recommend starting. You can pick up a decent pad for under twenty quid. The course works just as well on a pad as it does on a full kit, and most of my students start that way before moving across to a kit when they're ready.
Is this suitable for complete beginners?
Yes. The course starts from absolute zero and assumes you've never touched a drumstick. The first level begins with your very first groove and builds from there, step by step, through four graded levels based on the Trinity Rock and Pop syllabus.
I've never played before. Is this course for me?
It's built specifically for you. You don't need any experience, any music theory, or any idea how to read notation. You start by learning real songs from lesson one, which means you're making music straight away rather than just working through exercises. Most students play their first recognisable groove within the first session.
What do you mean by graded levels?
The course follows the Trinity Rock and Pop grading structure across four levels: Foundation, Building, Developing, and Performing. Each level uses real songs to teach you the skills for that grade, so you're always learning in a musical context rather than just practising patterns. It's the same framework used by music schools and private teachers, but you can work through it at home at your own pace.
Why is this free?
Because this course has helped so many of my students over the years, and so much of the online drum education space is focused on technique and exercises rather than real music. As a beginner you're overwhelmed by "what do I practise first?" — this course answers that, and removing the fee means more people actually start playing drums. That's the whole point.
How long until I see real progress?
Most students play their first real groove in their very first session. If you practise for twenty to thirty minutes a few times a week, you'll notice a genuine difference within the first month.
Will it work on my phone or tablet?
Yes, it works on any device. A lot of students prop their phone up on a music stand next to the kit or pad and follow along that way.
Can I go at my own pace?
Completely. There are no deadlines, no live sessions, and no pressure to keep up with anyone else. You get lifetime access, so whether you practise every day or pick it up when life allows, the course is always there.
Do I need to be able to read music?
No. The videos are recorded so you can follow along by sight and ear. Drum notation for each section is also on screen if you want to use it, but you won't be left behind either way.
How many lessons are in the course?
Four graded levels, ten songs, and forty-three video lessons. Each song is broken down across multiple videos covering the groove, the feel, and the technique. Any new content added in future is included automatically.
